Michael studied Shotokan karate in Melbourne, Houston, Auckland and since 2009 in Sydney under Krug Sensei. He was awarded his Shodan in 1997 and graded to Godan in 2015.  One of the highlights of his karate training has been studying under senior instructors such as Stan Schmidt Sensei and Keith Geyer Sensei.
